Isolated Storm Chances, Continued Heat

By · July 2, 2012 at 1:01 pm

It’s another hot day across Indiana with highs in the 90s and heat indices that will soar above 100 in many spots. A Heat Advisory continues for Bloomington to Columbus points south and an Excessive Heat Warning continues ’til 8pm for Southwest Indiana. Take it easy outside!

It’s also a Knozone Action Day with Air Quality heading into the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” zone. If you’re especially old or very young or have any respiratory problems, it could be difficult to breathe this afternoon. What can you do? Gas up after 6, carpool, and avoid idling.

Air quality will suffer across much of Central Indiana where Air Quality Alerts are in place for the day.

And don’t forget the sunscreen and shades! Our UV Index today is a 10. Unprotected skin could burn in less than 15 minutes!

While some areas have had rain here and there the past few days, and while we have the shot at isolated storms today through Thursday – the drought is likely to persist or worsen. Central Indiana is in a Severe Drought with Extreme Drought conditions in Northeast and Southwest Indiana.

Here’s a look at your Independence Day forecast. Plan on hot (but not quite record hot) conditions with a high of 97 and a chance of isolated storms.

Your WTHR-TV 7-Day features more heat and humidity. The best chance of rain all week may not arrive until Sunday and even that’s only a 30% chance.

Finally, your WTHR-TV Hoosier Pic at noon. While many areas where high and dry over the weekend, Diane Bredewater’s backyard got a nice rainstorm in Miami County! Submit your pic here: https://www.facebook.com/ChikageWindlerFanPage?ref=tn_tnmn or here: https://www.facebook.com/WTHR13?ref=ts

Stay cool!

What is the time line for this current heat wave to end? What do the long range weather models show?

James, the outlook for July shows above normal temperatures with below normal precip expected. We should drop into the mid 80s next week.
