From Sun Today To Storms Friday

By · May 8, 2014 at 4:16 pm

How are you enjoying central Indiana’s first back-to-back 80 degree days in seven months?  At this hour Kokomo, Marion, Seymour and Muncie are nearing 90 degrees.  Highs today reached the warmest levels we’ve seen since September 11 last year when highs were in the mid-90s.  The air mass over central Indiana is more typical of the middle of June.

TEMPS

If you enjoy summer-like heat and humidity then you’ll enjoy this evening as temperatures hold in the 70s well past sunset.

No big changes to the Friday forecast, which will be soggy and stormy at times.  Rain and areas of thunder arrive after midnight tonight and set the stage for a damp Friday morning commute.

No severe weather tonight but the western half of the state, including Indianapolis, is under a Slight Risk for severe storms Friday afternoon and evening.  It’s still uncertain how much the atmosphere will recover after early day rain, and if cloud cover lingers long enough the threat for the I-70 corridor diminishes a great deal with more of a focus on southern Indiana.

We’ll update the severe risk potential in the morning after analyzing radar and satellite trends.  Areas of heavy rain and lightning are a good bet tomorrow, and some locations will pick up a half-inch to an inch of rain between tonight and predawn Saturday depending on the track of heavier storms.

It continues to look better and better for much of Saturday as the convective boundary settles south of the area along the Ohio River.  We’re calling for decent sunshine and highs in the mid to upper 70s.  This is great news with Kids Day/Rookie Run, the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis & quite a few college and university graduations taking place.

PLANNER_3

Mother’s Day remains warm and humid with isolated rain/storm chances.  After a summer-like start to next week, long range indicators continue to point toward a cooler than normal trend arriving next Wednesday.  Have a great evening.
