At 2pm today, the temperature hit 90 degrees in Indianapolis!  That’s just one more way for Mother Nature to remind us that this year has been anything but typical.  The average high this time of year is 79 and the average number of 90+ highs for Indy is only 15!  Today’s 90 brings our 2011 total to a whopping 42 days!

So where does that put us in the “standings” for 90+ heat?  Thanks to the National Weather Service for providing these stats:

Years With the Most Days of 90 degree Weather
1983 58
1936 55
1954 50
1988 49
1934 46
1953, 1941 45
1894 43
1933, 1913, 1895, 2011 42

We are now tied for 8th place for most 90s on record!  Impressive as that is, it’s a far cry from the record of 58 days set in 1983!

And with a very strong cold front on the way later today, our brief flirtation with 90 will be nothing but a memory in 24-hours.  Highs may only manage low 70s!  And Thursday and Friday’s highs may stay in the chilly 60s with wake-up temps in the low to mid 40s.  Summer now, fall later…and Mother Nature is clearly having fun with us!  My friends in Minnesota have already seen the impact of the front with upper 80s yesterday and FREEZE WATCHES hoisted for the first time this season!  Hoosiers won’t fall as far or as fast…but it will be a wild ride once that front moves through.

Take Care!

Two Days of Summer

Posted By · September 12, 2011 at 2:13 pm

It’s a gorgeous day across Central Indiana as sunshine dances with cumulus clouds.  I can’t rule out a pop-up shower or t-shower, but the chances are quite slim (only around 10%).  So if you like it warm…go out and enjoy it while you can!  Highs today and tomorrow should reach upper 80s to around 90!  I know that sounds warm, but we’ve actually seen triple digit heat in Indianapolis as late as September 15th!  (It hit 100 both September 14 and 15 in 1939).  If you prefer fall-like temperatures, no worries.  Chilly air moves in mid to late week with highs Thursday and Friday only in the 60s!

Enjoy your week!

Summer-like Warmth Returns

Posted By · September 11, 2011 at 11:43 pm

Get ready for a couple days of mid 80s for highs and more sunshine than we’ve seen in the last week!  Though most areas should be dry on Monday, there could be a very isolated shower (I went with a lowly 10% chance).  Then on Tuesday, a strong cold front approaches.  Several of the computer models are sweeping the front through Central Indiana totally dry…others bring an isolated shower or storm.  I’m calling for a 20% chance – mainly late.  After that, it looks like a mainly dry but cooler week ahead.

Enjoy your week!

Mostly Cloudy, More Spotty Showers Expected Sunday

Posted By · September 10, 2011 at 11:42 pm

Hope you’re having a good weekend so far despite the dreary weather we’ve been having.

*Cool Temperatures: We made it into the 70s for the first time since last weekend.  73 is still considerably cooler than the average high of 80 and Indy the coolest spot on the map for highs today from the Plains to the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic!

*Warming Trend: We’ll get closer tomorrow with a high around 76, then see a two-day warming trend with highs into the 80s.

*Fog & Spotty Showers:  We may wake up to more patchy dense fog and there will still be a few showers possible again tomorrow – rotating around our pesky area of low pressure.  I’m going with a 30% chance of showers (maybe an isolated t-shower for Sunday)

*Project 9/11 Dedication Ceremony Weather 4pm tomorrow:
Mostly cloudy, slight chance of a shower and temp around 76.

*Tropics: Maria will curve away from land in the Atlantic, Nate will make landfall in Mexico, a third area (shaded in yellow) has a low chance for formation

Scattered showers for weekend festivals

Posted By · September 9, 2011 at 5:45 pm

This is a huge weekend for outdoor festivals – French Market, Indy Greek Festival, Penrod, Tipton County Pork Festival and the Zionsville Fall Festival.

Scattered showers are likely Saturday and Sunday. Up to  half-inch of rain is possible and thunderstorms are possible, but severe weather is not expected.

Hurricane Katia is turning away from the east coast and Tropical Storm Nate will make landfall in Mexico this weekend. Tropical Storm Maria will threaten the southeastern US early next week before turning away from the east coast.

Temperatures will stay in the 70s through Sunday. Back in the 80s early next week.

Have a great weekend!

Warming Up… But Rain Chances Aren’t Gone Yet

Posted By · September 9, 2011 at 5:29 am

Warmer temps are moving in, but the rain isn’t completely out of the forecast just yet!

Highs today will push close to 70 degrees with cloudy skies, patchy drizzle, and spotty showers.

Overnight, the slight chance for rain sticks as temps drop into the upper 50s.

Saturday we’ll warm up to the mid 70s with the chance for spotty showers and an isolated thunderstorm.  Severe weather is not expected, and neither is a complete washout.

Sunday, the temp is cranked to the upper 70s with a chance for a spotty shower.

You won’t need to cancel weekend plans, but keep the radar handy if you have outdoor plans.

Damp & Rainy Weather Sticks Around

Posted By · September 8, 2011 at 6:46 am

It’s another day when you’ll need to grab your sweater and rain gear!

Highs will only reach the low to mid 60s today with off and on spotty showers and drizzle.

The chance for rain continues tonight as temps fall into the 50s.

Friday should be warmer, but we’ll still be watching for light spotty showers on the radar.  Highs Friday are expected to hit around 70 degrees.

Saturday, temps hit the mid 70s as rain chances stick around.  The weekend doesn’t look like a washout, but if you outdoor plans, keep your smart phone nearby so you can check the radar.

Sunday, highs warm into the upper 70s with a slight chance for an isolated thunderstorm.

Temps become more seasonal for the weekend into early next week.

Spotty Showers & Cool Temps

Posted By · September 7, 2011 at 6:10 am

Brr!  Chilly air has settled into Central Indiana, and it’s going to feel even colder today because a brisk North breeze will hit the state.

Highs today will only hit the mid 60s with cloudy skies and a chance for spotty showers.  Winds will gust out of the North up to 30mph.

There’s a chance of rain each and everyday through Sunday, as temps eventually warm into close to 80 next Monday.

We’re not expecting a washout each and every day… but we will see off and on showers in the forecast through the weekend.
